The great Migration
The Great Migration was a widespread migration of African Americans from the rural south to the North, Midwest, and West. This resettlement occurred over most of the 20th century, from 1910 until about 1970.
A movement of six million people was certain to remake cities and entire regions across the U.S. The Great Migration still shapes African American culture to this day, even as some argue that we have entered a “New Great Migration” in the 2020s.
In this session, learn the rationale behind millions of Black Americans’ move North and West, the impact on the country, and the legacy of this mass movement. We will highlight everyday peoples as well as more widely known historical figures, and use Washington, DC’s Black Broadway to visualize the real life implications of the Great Migration in one neighborhood. Duration: 60 minutes. Online experiences are hosted on Zoom. Internet access is required.
JOURNEY To juneteenth: The first emancipation
Journey to Juneteenth chronicles the four years between the first Presidential emancipation of enslaved peoples –here in Washington, DC– to the breaking of the final vestiges of Confederate control in Texas. When Union troops reached Galveston, Texas in June 1865, the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation was fulfilled. That day became a celebration and is known as Juneteenth.
The end of slavery in the United States marked a second independence; a “new birth of freedom” for four million formerly enslaved people across the nation. This program links emancipation to Juneteenth by way of the United States Colored Troops and stories from DC that helped shape the entire nation. This program shares key elements of both the Black Broadway and Pennsylvania Ave experiences. Duration: 60 minutes. Online experiences are hosted on Zoom. Internet access is required.
